Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro's original and most established path — the only route with hut accommodation instead of camping. Known as the 'Coca-Cola Route,' it's the most affordable but has the lowest success rate due to its shorter acclimatization time.

Overview

The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro's most famous and historically significant path — it was the route used by Hans Meyer on the first successful summit in 1889. It's the only route that offers hut accommodation (basic but sheltered) rather than camping, making it appealing to trekkers who prefer not to sleep in tents.

However, the Marangu Route has the lowest summit success rate of all routes (around 65%) because its shorter duration provides less time for acclimatization. The ascent and descent follow the same trail, which means less variety in scenery.

Despite these drawbacks, Marangu remains popular for its affordability, hut accommodation, and the sense of walking in the footsteps of Kilimanjaro's pioneering climbers. The route is well-maintained and suitable for trekkers with moderate fitness.

We recommend adding an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut if your schedule allows — this significantly improves summit success rates.
