Overview

The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's second most popular route after Marangu, earning its 'Whiskey Route' nickname for being more challenging than the 'Coca-Cola' Marangu path. Over seven days, you'll traverse five distinct ecological zones — from lush rainforest at the base to the arctic summit — giving your body the gradual acclimatization it needs for success.

The route's greatest strength is its 'climb high, sleep low' profile. On Day 3, you ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,900m — a textbook acclimatization strategy that significantly boosts your summit chances.

The Barranco Wall on Day 4 is the route's most dramatic feature: a steep, scramble-like ascent that rewards you with panoramic views of the Western Breach and the glaciers of the summit. It's challenging but not technical — anyone in good fitness can manage it with our guides' support.

Our Machame Route treks include a professional mountain guide, assistant guides, a full mountain crew (porters and cook), quality camping equipment, and all meals prepared fresh on the mountain. We maintain a 85% summit success rate — well above the industry average.
