About Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park may be small (552 km²), but it packs remarkable diversity into its boundaries. Encompassing Mount Meru (Tanzania's second-highest peak), the Momella Lakes, montane forest, and open savanna, the park offers a microcosm of Tanzania's natural beauty just 40 minutes from Arusha city.

The Momella Lakes — a chain of seven shallow alkaline lakes — are the park's signature feature. Each lake has a different color depending on mineral content and algae, creating a stunning mosaic against the backdrop of Mount Meru and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro.

The park is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can do a walking safari, accompanied by an armed ranger. Walking through the forest with giraffes and buffalo nearby is an exhilarating experience that vehicle-based safaris cannot match.

Arusha National Park also serves as the starting point for Mount Meru treks and is a convenient day-trip option for travelers arriving in or departing from Arusha who have a few hours to spare.
