About Mafia Island

Mafia Island is Tanzania's best-kept coastal secret — a laid-back island in the Indian Ocean, 200 kilometers south of Dar es Salaam, known for its whale shark encounters, pristine coral reefs, and complete absence of mass tourism.

The Mafia Island Marine Park protects 822 square kilometers of ocean, including some of the healthiest coral reefs in East Africa. But the island's claim to fame is its whale shark population — the largest gathering of these gentle giants in the Western Indian Ocean, present from October to March.

Snorkeling or diving with a whale shark — a fish that can reach 12 meters but feeds only on plankton — is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences in the natural world. Mafia offers some of the most reliable whale shark encounters anywhere.

Beyond whale sharks, Mafia offers excellent snorkeling, traditional dhow sailing, fishing with local fishermen, and the chance to experience island life as it has been for centuries. The island's single main road is unpaved, there are no traffic lights, and the pace of life is gloriously slow.
